Impact on culture
It’s impossible not to link things together once they are in your brain. Let’s say I have a tiny interest in architecture, more precisely in public plastic arts/sculptures. How do I connect this with tattoos?
We are culturally defined creatures, if we want it or not. We are connected to environment we live in. Architecture has a big role in that and public sculptures are big part of that!
When sculpture is put into public space (legally) there are many steps before they are actually executed. You can’t put everything you want, and definitely the art that is put into public can’t be done anonymously. – why? because it has impact on culture, on people who come after us. This kind of art speaks for generations and it has impact that we don’t even think about. But just imagine how London would look like without that historical buildings you have in your mind, even if you haven’t been in London, you know it!! – cool ha?? :))
OK – let’s link that with tattoos.
I have to emphasise that this is just my vision, the way I think right now!
With tattoos we feel free to put on our body whatever we want, it is our body, our right — OK, agreed. But since it is summer my eyes are attacked with tattoos all over the town and it got me thinking. I see them even if I don’t want to.. haha …
I see us as walking, living, talking, shiting SCULPTURES – that speak with our images on bodys to others around us. So – we do not have tattoos only for ourselves. When I hear words “I am doing it just for ME” – and than you put it on your arm – well at that moment is not only for YOU anymore, because it is also there for ME. (it’s totally fine, I just want you to know that:))
This tattooed bodys will die, they won’t go to history the same as architecture, but step by step it creates the image of the culture – we are influencing perception of how tattoos are defined in surrounding we live in. And I believe that is a strong thing that tattoo artists should have in their mind. How do you want future generations to perceive this kind of art?
Do we think about that? we would find it really strange if traditional building from Japan would be build in Slovenia – but we do not care about this in tattoo world in general. I realised how important it is to ME to have that in mind – to react based on my culture. How my role as tattoo artist has impact on culture I work in/live in. I know I am just small small small small,… small small… small :)) part of bigger picture (small!!!) – but still, I am, you are! Not only if you are tattoo artist, but also as person with tattoo. We speak with our tattoos to others and that language is sometimes stronger than using words. If we choose the words that come out of our mouth, because we want to be understood the right way and make some kind of image of who we are – than I guess we should also think how we speak with our presence. Art was always there to interact with public, to make some kind of statement, to create an image of something… I have no idea what you want to tell with your art, it’s free will and you should be able to speak whatever you want. But it is important which “words” you use when you do so, IF you want to be understood.
There is a difference between decoration and art. – both are part of our lives, but the role they play is completely different!! With tattoos I find it hard to make the limit of what is what sometimes – but if I am true to you, I still do in most cases. If I can imagine something on my grandmother’s table cover… I see it as decoration.
I will give you just one example that I like the most and than if this makes your mind MOVE I am sure you can find many more.
I chose this one, because it tells everything – and it’s hilarious!
Movie Amélie /2001/
If you don’t know the movie… well… that SUX. #thepiratebay.com (haha).
We can take the same thing that works completely different depending of its context. It doesn’t have to take much to make something more out of it – so don’t be afraid of art.
I will try to summarise the story. Amelies father has this garden dwarf that he loves. He puts alot of effort in making his garden beautiful and he uses this garden dwarf as decoration.
Amelie steals it from his garden and takes it to travel – to experience THE NEW. – with that she gave that dwarf a new meaning. The point of subject was changed.
Dwarf has amazing time traveling and it sends selfies to Amelies father, just to irritate him and to show him there is world(ART) out there to discover!
The END.
